A 17-year-old boy died after his car veered off the roadway along Santiago Canyon Road last week, authorities said.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to the roadway just south Diamond Blue Haul Road about 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, and found the boy’s father performing CPR on him after his Honda Civic had crashed into a tree, spokesman Officer Anselmo Templado said.

The boy was identified by the coroner as Benjamin Broughton, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Todd Hylton said. He was from Foothill Ranch, according to the CHP.

Broughton was driving his car northbound on Santiago Canyon when, for unknown reasons, the car veered to the left, crossing the southbound lane before hitting the tree, the CHP said.

His father had been tracking him and rushed to the scene when he noticed the teen had been idle along the roadway, Templado said.

Broughton died at the scene, the CHP said.
