Nandy ran for the Labor Party leadership in 2020 after serving as a backbencher for an additional four years. She finished third with 16.3% of the vote, trailing only Keir Starmer and Rebecca Long-Bailey.

Starmer later named Nandy as Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in April 2020. Nandy was chosen to serve as the Shadow Secretary of State for Leveling Up, Housing, and Communities after a personnel change in November 2021.
