During his teenage years, he started attending folk music events at the Ash Grove on Melrose Avenue. Marin enrolled to California State University, Northridge which was at the time known as San Fernando Valley State College and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fratenity.
To avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War, Marin moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in the late 1960s. It was there he met Tommy Chong and the pair began performing together in an improv troupe. They later teamed up as a stand-up comedy duo, releasing their debut album, “Cheech and Chong” in 1971.
